COP welcomes intervention by Williams

In a press release last night, the Congress of the People (COP) said it welcomed the timely clarification from acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Williams concerning Minister Jack Warner's purported instructions aimed at the suppression of crime statistics.

"The COP is of the view that such an instruction, even if it were lawful, was wholly impractical and contrary to the public's right to know—a fundamental element of modern governance and democracy.

No minister can take powers unto themselves not provided in the Constitution and laws of Trinidad and Tobago, the statement said.
