Call for Kublalsingh to justify re-routing highway

By Carolyn Kissoon carolyn.kissoon@trinidadexpress.com

ENVIRONMENTAL activist Dr Wayne Kublalsingh was on Monday asked to justify the alternative route suggested by the Highway Re-Route Movement for the Debe to Mon Desir segment of the Solomon Hochoy Highway extension to Point Fortin.

The request was made by Minister of Sport Anil Roberts.

He said, "I am very strong on the environmental component. I want to ask my colleague Dr Wayne Kublalsingh how come it is that he would like to re-route the highway, a four-lane highway, through the Oropouche West lagoon. Did he consider what the environmental impact would be?"

Roberts was an activist against the construction of a smelter in Chatham in 2005.

"For example, if my Government says they are going to build a smelter, I will resign in the morning," he said.

Roberts said the construction of a highway through the Oropouche West lagoon would destroy flora, fauna and several species of animals.

"I am not understanding. Could he please explain that to the population because it seems that (Kublalsingh) is fighting something other than an environmental issue. Is he a politician? Is he with (Ancel) Roget just to bring down the government or to get another government in power? He is not making sense, he is an environmentalist. I am one too, so let him please explain to the population how he can justify suggesting going through the swamp," he said.
