Car thief killed in shootout with police

POLICE officers of the Central Division on Tuesday shot and killed a bandit after he stole a car, crashed it and attempted to shoot his way to freedom.

Police reports are that around 11 p.m., 27-year-old Garth Simmons, of San Juan, approached his victim, whose name was withheld by officers, while he was seated in his black Nissan B-13 parked along Factory Road, Chaguanas.

Police said the man was waiting on his wife who was at work at a nearby restaurant and bar. After he was robbed of his vehicle and other valuables, the owner of the vehicle went to the bar and reported the matter to the police who issued an all points bulletin.

The car was spotted near Saith Park, Chaguanas, and police chased Simmons who crashed the vehicle. Police say Simmons also shot at the officers after exiting the vehicle. The police returned fire, hitting Simmons about the body.

The injured man was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A .38 revolver and two live rounds of ammunition were recovered.

Police said Simmons was a known car thief who had previous convictions for similar offences.
