Footballer Marcus Lawrence died from heart failure caused by a defect in the mitral valve of the organ, an autopsy found yesterday.
The autopsy was performed at the San Fernando mortuary.
Lawrence, 20, collapsed and died after scoring a goal during a training session at Skinner Park, San Fernando on Friday evening.
Lawrence, a member of Club Sando, also played basketball for La Romaine Jet Stars.
His aunt, Charmaine Nelson-James, said her nephew never complained of feeling unwell and his condition was not detected in his routine medical examinations.
“We are all in shock right now. We cannot believe he died from a heart condition because he was never sick but the doctor explained to us that this condition is not easily detected,” she said.
Lawrence lived with his mother, Marlene Nelson, and two younger siblings at Southern Main Road, La Romaine. And he was an active member of Revival Tabernacle in La Romaine.
A medical doctor told the Express that mitral valve prolapse is a heart problem in which the valve that separates the upper and lower chambers of the left side of the heart does not close properly. He said the mitral valve controls the flow of blood between two chambers of the heart, called the left atrium and the left ventricle.
The doctor said many patients with the heart condition do not have symptoms and it can remain undetected for years.
Lawrence will be laid to rest on Thursday.
