American actor Damien Dante Wayans was so impressed with the 2013 International Soca Monarch (ISM) and Trinidad Carnival that he returned for the 2014 edition.
“Round one was exciting; so I am back for round two because it was so good the last time,” the excited Wayans told the media.
He was one of the five celebrities flown in for Fantastic Friday and presented to the media yesterday at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad hotel along with actors Boris Kodjoe (Real Husbands of Hollywood, Soul Food, Love and Basketball) and his wife, Nicole Ari Parker (Brown Sugar, Soul Food).
Hustle and Flow actor Anthony Anderson and Love and Hip Hop’s Tahiry Jose make up the rest of the celebrity visitors and are due to arrive in this country by the end of the week.
Kodjoe and Parker said they had always heard about Trinidad and Tobago and were happy to finally come here.
“My wife and I like to travel a lot and we are glad we got the opportunity to come.”
Parker said she came to Trinidad before but was too young to remember.
Kodjoe and Parker were introduced to soca music, they said, by actress Gabrielle Union and her basketball boyfriend Dwyane Wade, who love the music.
He was pleasantly surprised by the warmth of Trinidadians and the food.
“Dante told us before we came that this is not Hollywood and that the smiles we see on the people are real; not pretend,” Parker said.
Since coming to Trinidad, Kodjoe has enjoyed Chinese food; while Parker was excited about pumpkin choka and homemade pepper sauce.
The two will attend a few fetes before returning to their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday. Although they would miss this year’s Carnival; they plan to come back to enjoy the festival on a personal trip.
Wayans, who said he is backing reigning joint Soca Monarch Machel Montano for this year’s title, will stay on for the Carnival and is booked to play mas with Yuma.
“I am excited to see Machel and SuperBlue. Last year they had me divided because I loved them both.”
Parker, Kodjoe and Wayans all promised to keep their fans updated about their trip here via Twitter and Instagram.
