A CHURCH elder was killed yesterday afternoon, when he was struck by a car while crossing the Priority Bus Route in the Barataria area.
McArthur Dick, 65, lived in Champs Fleurs and was the father of seven—four daughters and three sons. He was the caretaker of the Evangelical Temple at 113 Tenth Street, Barataria.
Police said around 3 p.m., while Dick was crossing the bus route, he was struck by a car that was heading east.
A friend of Dick's, who was close by when the accident occurred, told the Express Dick remained on the ground for about 15 minutes before he died.
He did not want his name mentioned, but said Dick was well liked, both in his church and in his community.
"He was a wonderful human being and actually, yesterday afternoon, he was on his way to clean the church for our weekend services," said the man. "But that ambulance took too long to get there."
Barataria police later called a district medical officer, who arrived on the scene and ordered the body be removed to the Port of Spain Mortuary.
The driver of the car was also questioned by the police, who are continuing investigations.
A total of 155 people have been killed on the nation's roads for the year, according to an Express tally.
