City corporation celebrates 100 years with steelband jamboree on Father’s Day

POS MAYOR: Raymond Tim Kee

Mark Fraser

Fathers will be treated to  a steelband fiesta on Sunday when the Port of Spain City Corporation continues its ongoing 100th anniversary celebrations.

The theme of the event is “The City of Pan—100 years stronger”.  Among the highlights will be performances  by artistes from Tobago and the RBC Redemption Soundsetters. The steelband extravaganza starts at 3 pm and culminates with a jamboree at Woodford Square, Port of Spain, at 8 pm.

To date, Port of Spain Mayor Raymond Tim Kee has been spearheading the celebrations which includes 12 electoral districts. Opposition MPs  Marlene McDonald is responsible for  Port of Spain South and  Patricia McIntosh is in charge of Port of Spain North/St Ann’s West.

Deputy Mayor Keron Valentine, said in a telephone interview on Wednesday: “Fathers will be in for a great treat. We have 26 top steelband orchestras parading through the streets of east Port of Spain starting on the Piccadilly Greens. Steelband started around the bridge. We will be hosting a contingent of about 60 people  from Tobago. They will be portraying the traditional Tobago wedding, with the characters like the bride, groom, bridal party and fancy sailor. RBC Redemption Soundsetters will be accompanying the contingent.”

Valentine added: “We are asking our burgesses, constituents and the public at large to come out and enjoy an evening of entertainment and celebration of this great milestone achievement in the life of our capital city. The parade brings you to the city centre. We are hoping a number of fathers will come out to the event.”

Asked about the funding for the  100th anniversary, Valentine said: “We have written to the corporate sectors.  It has been coming in slowly. We are working within a budget. But not as fast as we expected.”  Tim Kee had complained about inadequate funding.

Meanwhile, Valentine said: “We had the Miss City of Port of Spain. We hosted 300 children at MovieTowne. We had the Junior Calypso Competition on Disaster Management. The celebration is moving apace. We are asking the public to support us.”
