TWO workers at the Statutory Service Commission were each granted $25,000 bail yesterday when they appeared in the Port of Spain Magistrates' Court charged with having sex in public.
June Maraj, 44, and Jawwad Ali, 22, appeared before Senior Magistrate Annette McKenzie in the Fourth (A) Court jointly charged with behaving in an indecent manner by having sex at a public place and wilfully and obscenely exposing their person.
Upon their appearance, Ali, who lives in Aranjuez, and Maraj, from Chaguanas, both pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.
They were arrested by police who were on patrol around 7 a.m., yesterday at Victoria Square, Port of Spain and later charged with the offences.
When the matter was called shortly after 2 p.m., several relatives of the accused sat in the courtroom and listened as it proceeded.
Defence attorney John Heath said Ali had been employed as a clerk at the Statutory Service Commission for the past two years and had no previous or pending matters before the court.
Ali, he said, came from a stable home, with his mother being employed as an assistant registrar at the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) and his father being a customs officer.
He said Maraj also had a permanent address at Maraj Avenue, Chaguanas and had been employed as an administrative assistant for the past nine years.
She was also of good character, Heath said, as she had never been charged with any prior offences.
The matter was transferred to the Third Court and will continue on December 12.
