Constable dies in highway crash

A POLICE constable was killed instantly early yesterday morning when he lost control of the car he was driving and slammed into a lamp post as he headed north along the Uriah Butler Highway.

The officer, Jameel Ali, 42, of First Street, Barataria, worked at the Tunapuna Police Station and was the division's fleet manager.

Police said at 12.40 a.m., he was heading north along the Uriah Butler Highway when he lost control of the vehicle, and after hitting the lamp post, the car flipped several times and landed near the Caroni Bird Sanctuary.

Ali was thrown out of the car.

Police said he left the Tunapuna Police Station around 8 p.m. and last spoke to his wife around 12.30 a.m.

Chaguanas Police are continuing investigations.

The road death toll stood at 30 up to last night.
