Patrick Manning die-hards are refusing to believe that he may be on his way out of the political scene. Many believe the San Fernando East Member of Parliament will make a full recovery from his recent stroke and return to the office he has occupied for over four decades.
Few have accepted the possibility that the former prime minister may have to step down, making way for a by-election. But should his wife, Hazel, contest the seat, many would be in favour.
Marvis David, a constituent, said she was praying for Manning's recovery. "I have been a quiet supporter of Mr Manning for most of my life. I cried when I heard what happened. He will come back to us. I don't even want to talk about a by-election. I cannot think of anyone who would perform better," she said.
But David did not hesitate when asked whether she would support Mrs Manning for the position. "I would support her if her husband cannot make it back. She is a good woman, a decent woman," she said.
A shopkeeper, who asked not to be named, said Mrs Manning may be able to take control of the constituency. "She knows the ins and outs of the constituency. She has been at his side from day one. I will support her. But I am still hoping that Mr Manning makes a turn around and comes back to us," he said.
Richard Joseph, of Mon Repos, said: "Mr Manning may not be able to come back, we have to accept that. And if his wife wants to contest then I will support her."
Manning was enfeebled by a stroke on January 23. He suffered the attack at his Sumadh Gardens, San Fernando, home and was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital.
A hospital official said yesterday that Manning was showing signs of improvement. He said the former prime minister was undergoing physiotherapy and was in good spirits. The Express was told that Manning was unable to walk without assistance and cannot speak clearly.
