Cop held in 4-day police exercise
A police constable was among 98 persons arrested during a four-day police exercise which ended on Sunday evening.
The officer, who is on suspension, was driving through High Street, Princes Town when he was pulled aside in a police road block.
Police said the officer’s vehicle was searched and a pistol and three rounds of ammunition were seized. He was detained at the Princes Town Police Station up to last evening. Investigators said the officer was a suspect in several offences.
The exercise was conducted by the Southern Division police in Moruga, Princes Town, Ste Madeleine, Cocoyea, Pleasantville, Marabella, Gasparillo, Claxton Bay, San Fernando and La Romaine. The exercise was co-ordinated by Senior Supt Cecil Santana and included ASPs Maynard, Gaffoor and Seepersad, Sgts Vijay Ramdhanie, McIntosh and Rebiro, Insp Williams and Rampat and WPC Prince.
Persons were arrested for sexual offences, possession of arms and ammunition, possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and robbery.
Three firearms — .380 pistol, Rouger pistol and a shotgun — and nine rounds of assorted cartridges were seized.
Police said 152 traffic tickets were issued, including 19 tickets for driving under the influence of alcohol.
