Secretary of Fisherman and Friends of the Sea group Gary Aboud, was taken into police custody during a sit down protest outside of the International Waterfront Centre, Port of Spain today.

Aboud and several other activists staged a sit down protest near the water fountains and refused to obey police orders to vacate the area. He and other activist were physically removed from the site.

The fishermen had gathered at the waterfront for the second time this month to protest the Government’s plan to carry out seismic surveys in waters in the Gulf of Paria. The fishermen believe that their livelihoods will be affected if the survey is done and are calling for and Environmental Impact Assessment to be carried out before the survey gets the go ahead.

State-owned Petrotrin has responded that there will be minimal impact on the livelihood of fisherfolk.
