POLICE yesterday shot and killed a murder suspect in Couva.

The suspect, who was yet to be identified last night, was pronounced dead at hospital.

According to police, at around 2 p.m., officers of the Central Division Task Force, led by Senior Supt Johnny Abraham, Sgts Benjamin and Mohammed, and Cpl Radaykissoon, received information that a man was hiding in some bushes at Concerned Citizens Street.

Police responded and during a search of the area were fired upon by the suspect.

The officers returned fire and the suspect was hit several times.

The Express was told a police officer was also struck in the chest by a bullet, but he was unhurt since he was wearing a bullet-proof vest.

Police recovered a .380 pistol and several rounds of .38 ammunition in the suspect’s hand.

The suspect was taken to Couva District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Express was told the suspect was one of three men wanted in connection with the murder of Biche businessman Devanand Bholai earlier this year.

Bholai, 40, was killed by gunmen during a robbery at his home on March 16.

Bholai and his wife, Kemrajee Leela Jaikaran, were asleep when three gunmen entered their home.

They were tied up and gagged in their bedroom. The thieves demanded money, and Bholai was shot in the head.
