Couple freed of counterfeit charge

By Nikita Braxton-Benjamin

A COUPLE charged with having ten counterfeit $100 notes had the case against them dropped on Monday.

Naresh Sewlal and his wife, Vashti Sewlal, of Biche were before Justice Carla Brown-Antoine in the Port of Spain High Court charged with the September 19, 2006 offence.

It was alleged that at Enterprise, Chaguanas, Vashti Sewlal had eight $100 notes, knowing they were forged, while her husband had two such notes.

A jury was empanelled to hear the case after the couple pleaded not guilty to the charge.

But, before evidence was led on Monday, State attorney Mauriceia Joseph told the court the prosecution had made certain discoveries earlier in the day.

She said, as a result, the Director of Public Prosecutions had instructed that no evidence be offered against the husband and wife, who were represented by attorney Kevin Ratiram.

The foreman of the jury was instructed to return verdicts of not guilty against the couple and the two were discharged.
