Couple head to court for arms, ammo

By Rickie Ramdass

A 33-YEAR-OLD businessman and 30-year-old woman will appear before a Port of Spain magistrate later today on a total of eight charges arising out of the seizure of five assault rifles and a large quantity of ammunition at the Port of Port of Spain last Wednesday.

The weapons—three AK-47 assault rifles and two 9 mm submachine guns—and ammunition were seized by officials of the Customs and Excise Division after they were found hidden in a cargo container carrying household items, reports stated.

Police and Customs officials later interviewed several people in connection with the discovery, which led to the arrest of the couple from East Trinidad.

They are expected to face charges of possession of arms and ammunition, the illegal importation of prohibited items and making false declarations to Customs officials, sources said.

Police said they were also expected to make several more arrests in connection with the find.
