THE Police Service is not pleased with the level of crime in the country, although there has been a steady decrease in criminal activity in the past four years.
This according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mervyn Richardson, who has responsibility for Anti-Crime Operations, during yesterday's daily police press briefing held at Police Administration Building, Sackville Street, Port of Spain.
"Crime is in fact going down and my answer to the national community, yes, crime is going down. Whether we are satisfied with the level? No. We can always do more," Richardson said.
He said there was no society known to man that crime is not present. Richardson said both murders and serious crimes were reducing with a reported 15,858 serious crimes last year, 20,126 in 2010 and 22,162 in 2009.
He said he wanted to assure the public that crime was down and that police were doing all they can to keep it down and carry it even lower.
"What I can tell you as a matter of fact we are not seeing gang activity as we know them prior to the State of Emergency. We have not been seeing the drive-by (shootings). What I am not prepared to say, however, is that all gang activity has ceased," Richardson said, when asked about the level of gang activity in the country.
Richardson said police activity has caused the reduction in gang activity as they have heightened their presence.
