Crime spree ends in shootout with cops

A CRIME spree by three thieves in central Trinidad ended with a shootout with police yesterday afternoon.
Two of the suspects were held, one of whom was shot and is warded at hospital under police guard.
Police said around midday a gold Nissan Almera car with three armed men pulled up near KFC at Montrose, Chaguanas, and robbed three people of jewelry and $300.
The thieves sped off, and the victims reported the robbery at the Chaguanas Police Station.
Within the hour, police received a report of another robbery at Couva where cash and jewelry were also stolen by three armed men in a vehicle fitting the same description.
An all-points bulletin (APB) was issued and several police units from the Central Police Division, under supervision of Supt Johnny Abraham, and Insp Lawrence, as well as Viper One, and the K-9 unit went to Exchange Lots at Couva, where the suspects were cornered in their vehicle.
Police said the three suspects alighted from the vehicle and fired at police.
The driver, a 25-year-old man of Laventille, was detained by police, and another suspect, a 23-year-old man of Chaguanas, was shot in his abdomen and leg.
The latter is warded at the San Fernando General Hospital under police guard.
The third suspect escaped into the bushes.
