Dad dies in crash
Father of two, Nicholas Deonarinesingh, was on his way to ring in the new year with his family when he crashed into a lamppost and died on Tuesday night.
Deonarinesingh, 22, was driving his white three-tonne truck along Rochard Road, Penal when he lost control and slammed into the pole around 11.35pm.
He died at the scene.
Relatives said Deonarinesingh, of Issac Trace, Morne Diablo, was trying to get to his wife and two young children before midnight.
His brother, Anand Deonarinesingh, said, “He left home and was going to meet his wife and children at his in-laws’ house in Moruga. He wanted to bring them home before midnight, but he knew he left home late. He said he would ring in the new year with them there and then come home to continue the celebrations.”
Deonarinesingh’s wife, Alice, and their children three-year-old Justin and nine-month-old Kate had spent the day in Moruga, while he enjoyed a lime with friends in Penal.
“He is not a drinker, so he was not drunk. He wanted to be with his family at midnight. He was trying to get to them,” his brother said.
Anand Deonarinesingh said his family was contacted by a friend who lived in the area. “He told us Nicholas was in an accident. When we reached he was slumped over the steering wheel. He died. We called his wife and she came. She didn’t want to go back to their house. She couldn’t sleep in the room, so she went back by her mother. We rang in the new year looking at my brother’s body,” he said.
Relatives said Deonarinesingh, a fisherman, had planned to start building his own home this year. He was described as an ambitious, hardworking man.
Acting sergeant Seejattan of the Penal police station is continuing investigating.
