A FATHER of one was shot dead on Wednesday night while he was about to enter his apartment at Duncan Street, Port of Spain.
Police said around 9 p.m. the victim, Sheldon Gill, 33, was at the front door of his apartment when a man walked up to him and opened fire.
The shooter then ran off.
Gill's neighbours who heard the gunshots ran out and found him on the ground with several gunshot wounds about the body.
They took him to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he died almost an hour after arriving there.
The police who later visited the scene described the murder as gang-related.
Gill's mother, Sheila Gill, said she was unable to come to terms with his death since they were very close and she had spoken to him via telephone about an hour before he was shot dead.
"I don't know why someone did this to him because he was not in anything and he really loved his daughter (aged 16)," she also told reporters outside the Forensic Science Centre in St James, where she had gone to identify her son's body.
Homicide Bureau officers are continuing investigations.
The murder toll stood at 345 up to press time last night according to an Express tally. The murder toll for the same period last year stood at 299. óGG
