Divali Nagar on from tonight
THE annual Divali Nagar begins tonight at 7 p.m. with a grand cultural show and the national anthem being played on the steelpan and sitar.
The six nights filled with festivities will take place at the Divali Nagar site, Narsaloo Ramaya Marg, Endeavour, Chaguanas.
This year's theme is " Shree Krishna, Purna (Perfect) Avataar."
Tonight, persons can expect performances by chutney singer Rakesh Yankaran, the Bmobile Shiv Shakti Dance Group and others.
A bhajan will also be played using the national instrument - the steelpan.
There will be speeches by the president of the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) Dr Deokienanan Sharma, Larry Nath, chief executive officer of First Citizens Bank. and Rakesh Goswami, vice president of the Enterprise Services TSTT.The feature address will be given by Captain Pratima Dharm, the first Hindu chaplain in the US army.
Surujdeo Mangaroo is the chairperson for the programme.
What makes this year's celebrations different from previous years is the focus on youth Mangaroo said.
He said: " We are encouraging a youths to participate and we have two competitions this year. We have a youth champs contest which has been there for the last 14 years but we are having a dance competition as well where we get a lot of young people involved. Some of the our artistes that will be performing will be our young people. This year our real focus is on young people and we want to show them a way out of crime and criminal activities."
The Nagar is free to the public and will feature magic shows, fashion shows, tassa and giveaways.
