A PH driver and a female security guard found near a cemetery bleeding from wounds died while being treated at the Chaguanas Health Facility on Wednesday night.
Two others who were found nearby, a man and woman, remained in serious condition at hospital yesterday.
The dead man was identified as Clifford George, 39, of Carolina Village, Couva. He was found slumped over the steering wheel of a red Nissan Almera, shot multiple times. The dead woman, 23-year-old Salisha Langtoo, was found lying face down in a drain outside of the vehicle.
Another woman, identified only as Carlene, was found lying in the back seat of the car with a bullet wound to the face. And a man was found lying in a drain outside the cemetery, bleeding from chop wounds. He was identified as Kwesi Brooks, of Tobago.
Police are baffled by the events leading up to the slaughter.
The four were discovered by officers attached to the Central Division CID and Task Force outside a cemetery at Petersfield Road, Chaguanas, at around 6.50 p.m. The officers were responding to reports of explosions at the cemetery.
The four were taken to Chaguanas Health Facility, where George and Langtoo died while being treated.
Brooks, 31, was transferred to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope, while Carlene was taken to Port of Spain General Hospital to be treated for head injuries.
An autopsy performed at the Forensic Science Centre in St James by pathologist Dr Valery Alexandrov found that George suffered four gunshot wounds, while Langtoo was beaten to death.
Investigators traced the registration number of the vehicle and contacted the owner, who informed officers that George was plying his car for hire.
George’s aunt, Molly Samuel, said she couldn’t believe her nephew was dead.
“I took him when he was eight years old and took care of him like my own son. I last saw him on Tuesday morning, when I was leaving to go by my sister in Arima,” she said.
Samuel, 71, said her nephew worked as an electrician with a contractor at Point Lisas Industrial Estate.
George was the father of an eight-year-old boy, Omari.
“But he’s not working these days, so he doing some PH in the meantime. My nephew not involved in anything. He works for his son, he was his life. He was looking forward to buying a lot of things for him for Christmas,” she said.
Samuel said she was returning home from Arima on Wednesday night, when she heard her nephew had died.
“The owner of the vehicle said my nephew called him and said someone hired him for a job. I think he get caught in the middle of something. He was innocent,” she said.
Langtoo lived with relatives in an apartment building at Jennifer Street, Lisas Gardens, Couva. Neighbours described her as a respectable young woman.
Police have detained three men in connection with the murders.
Investigators said the men were caught attempting to break into a supermarket in Chaguanas around 9 p.m. They were being interrogated at Chaguanas Police Station last evening.
