Driver shot dead on highway

By Gyasi Gonzales

A 40-year-old Diego Martin man was shot dead on Thursday night when he stopped his car along the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway, near Grand Bazaar.

Hayden Thomas, of Mercer Road, Diego Martin, was employed at a private security firm up to last year and was the father of two children.

Police said around 8.30 p.m. on Thursday, he stopped his car at the Valsayn intersection, near the interchange, when another car with three occupants stopped alongside.

One of the occupants leaned out of the car and opened fire on Thomas, hitting him several times about the body. The driver of the other car then sped off.

With the highway still relatively busy at the time, several motorists stopped, and Thomas was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope where he was treated.

He died around 3 a.m. yesterday.

A team of officers led by Supt David Abraham later visited the scene. Homicide Bureau officers are continuing investigations.

The murder toll now stands at 89.
