Public Servants Association president Watson Duke today stood outside the Matco Building in Port of Spain, and used a megaphone to call the 75 persons working there to vacate the premises.
The building, located at henry Street, houses the Police Service's Crime and Problem Analysis (CAPA) unit, Professional Standards Unit, and Police Complaints Authority.
Duke said that last week Snr Supt Cumberbatch died after complaining that he was feeling unwell. Another police officer, Sgt Mark, is at the Port of Spain General Hospital "coughing up blood" Duke said. He added that rodents died at the building and the stench is causing those there to fall ill.
Duke told the Express it is a matter of health and safety and not a trade union thing, insisting that it is not a political gimmick in the lead up to the PSA's general elections due in two months time.
"How much more must die? How much more people have to fall ill?" Duke asked the workers.
Duke said all that has been done to remedy the situaiton, was the hiring of MTS cleaners.
However, he said the problem is bigger than just cleaning up milk and urine off the floor. The building must be sanitised, he said.
One worker was overheard telling another that the health inspector visited yesterday and deemed the building safe.
The inspectors came without notepad or equipment to test to ensure the place is safe, the Express was told.
"All must evacuate the building. Do not cater for who vex. Just write in the book you are not feeling well and leave", said Duke.
Duke said he was informed that acting CoP Stephen Williams is aware that "this is a building of death".
