Following a spate of brutal murders in East Port of Spain, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday announced a number of measures to break the cycle of violence in the area.
She said the East Port of Spain Development Company, which falls under the Planning Ministry, has been mandated to develop and redevelop the area to improve economic, social and physical conditions of this community.
Persad-Bissessar said between 2012-2013, some 26 projects valued at $25,065,958 have been started in the communities of East Port of Spain, in areas including Upper Belmont, Morvant, Eastern Quarry, Beetham Gardens, Sea Lots and John John.
She said several hundred persons have gained employment on these projects, which have positively impacted the lives of persons in these communities.
She said 12 projects were completed in 2012, and this year, 14 were in progress.
The Prime Minister met with the residents of East Port of Spain on Wednesday. following which she noted their main concerns were employment and housing.
Persad-Bissessar said proposals were put forward which her Government was considering, which includes sustained employment programmes and community training programmes for school dropouts and unqualified youths.
