El Dorado chop victim still in hospital
Suspect denied bail
THE VICTIM of a severe chopping is recovering at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, while two of the suspects wanted for wounding him remain on the run.
The victim—21-year-old Jessie Balchan, of Caura Royal Road, El Dorado—was attacked, beaten and chopped by three men on the afternoon of December 21 last year while he was at a jobsite near Cost Cutters Supermarket, on Eastern Main Road, near Caura Junction.
Connan Samuel, 21, of Kandahar, Arouca, appeared in the Tunapuna Magistrates' Court yesterday, charged with the attempted murder of Balchan. He was denied bail and remanded into custody until January 28.
The Express on Wednesday visited Balchan's family at their home, off Caura Royal Road, opposite a large Housing Development Corporation (HDC) site.
The family lives in two small wooden shacks, surrounded by sorrel plants, on a plot of land.
Balchan's stepbrother, who did not want to be named, spoke to the Express.
He said he felt horrible about what happened to his brother and could not understand why someone wanted to do this to him.
He confirmed that Balchan was chopped once on his neck and both his wrists had almost been severed during the attack.
Tunapuna police are continuing investigations.
