Embassy: Fifteen women held were not Venezuelan

THE Venezuelan Embassy has denied reports that 15 women held during a police raid in Mayaro last week were of that nationality.

During a visit on Monday to the Express, Independence Square, Port of Spain, press attache Rita Blanco said the embassy has since been informed by the authorities that the women are of various Latin American nationalities but that that there are no Venezuelans among them.

The women were taken into custody following police exercises in the Eastern Division last Friday.

It was reported the women were found in Mayaro and were taken to the Arima Police Station, where they were kept overnight.

They were interviewed with the help of a translator over the weekend and it was discovered that none of the women were Venezuelan, the attache said.

Blanco said initial reports appeared to have been made on the assumption, as most of the women appeared to be Latin American and spoke only Spanish.
