Escaped Icacos suspect in court

By Susan Mohammed

A 58-YEAR-OLD Icacos man appeared in court yesterday, charged with escaping lawful custody and wounding with intent to commit bodily harm.

Joseph Smith, of Icacos Junction, appeared before a Justice of the Peace at the Point Fortin Magistrates' Court.

The charge of escaping lawful custody relates to an allegation that on January 1, Smith escaped from the Cedros Police Station where he was detained by police officers investigating a case of wounding with intent.

On Thursday, Smith was arrested by officers of the South-Western Division Task Force (SWDTF), who found him in a Public Transportation Service Corporation (PTSC) bus along the Southern Main Road, Guapo.

The other charge alleges that on December 31, 2012, around 10 p.m., Smith chopped with a cutlass 48-year-old Ramnarine Bunsee at Icacos Junction.

The charges were laid by Sgt Peter Ramdeen of the SWDTF.

Smith was remanded into custody until Monday when it is expected he will appear before a Point Fortin magistrate.
