Fake cops kill Laventille man

THE brother of a police officer was shot dead early yesterday morning after he and another friend were approached by men claiming to be police.

According to police reports around 8:15 a.m. Lyndon "Bago" Woods, the brother of PC Andy Melville, who is attached to the Woodbrook Police Station, was standing outside his Desperlie Crescent, Laventille home when he and a male friend were approached by two men armed with guns.

The gunmen, police said, asked Woods and his friend for the whereabouts of a man nicknamed "Scottie Pippen" who lives in the Desperlie Crescent area. Woods and his friend attempted to flee after the gunmen said they were police officers.

The gunmen then opened fire hitting Woods about the body. He died on the spot.

A party of officers led by ASP Ajith Persad and Inspector Sahadeo Singh along with homicide officers visited the scene and the area was searched for the murder suspects.

Relatives of Woods said he was not involved in any criminal activities and was not a part of any gang. They added that he only moved into the area two years ago and had previously lived in Cocorite. Woods, 39, was to celebrate his 40th birthday tomorrow. This brings the murder toll for the year to 369 according to an Express tally.

Investigations are continuing.
