Fatal fall: robbery suspect impaled on spike

A man shot by police in Arima yesterday died after falling into a river where he was impaled on a metal spike.

The police responded to a call by a man around 4 a.m. yesterday who said he had been robbed by two men.

The men, who were said to be around 25 and 14 years old, were spotted by police near a temple at Mausica and pursued.

A radio report yesterday stated that one police officer's gun fell during the pursuit and was grabbed by the older suspect.

Another officer then shot the man once. He fell into a river and was impaled. Police later said the robbery victim's valuables were found on the dead man's younger accomplice.

The dead man has not yet been identified.
