Fire victim gets wheelchair from Glenn

By Innis Francis innis.francis@trinidadexpress.com

Minister of the People and Social Development Glenn Ramadharsingh yesterday came to the aid of fire victim Steve Brown, who escaped his burning house last week by throwing himself down steps to escape the flames.

Ramadharsingh donated a new wheelchair, clothing, and a hamper valued at $4,000 to Brown.

Brown, 51, who is confined to a wheelchair and is paralysed from his waist down, lost everything in the fire at his Mon Repos, San Fernando, home on January 18. He has since been living at a friend’s home at Coquette Street, Ste Madeleine.

Ramadharsingh said: “We came about his information through the work in the media. The ministry will stand with him in whatever way. We need to give him some support. He has been using a wheelchair that had been loaned to him. We made the arrangement to give him a new wheelchair today.”

Ramadharsingh said  with the help of the Housing Development Corporation, accommodation for Brown was being sought for at least for six months.

Brown expressed his gratitude and said that his major concern was that the housing unit would have easy access for differently-abled people.
