THREE days into the new year, this country has recorded its first murder for 2013.

Police have since given the motive for the shooting incident which left 26-year-old Kevin Dover dead as a result of war between rival gangs in the Barataria area.

The murder toll for 2012 stood at 383 according to an Express tally, 29 more than the previous year.

Dover and Tarik David, 20, both of Ninth Avenue, Barataria, were ambushed around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, while liming with friends close to a shop along the roadway where they lived, said police.

Investigators said, while standing outside the shop, the men were approached by three gunmen dressed in black, who later opened fire, hitting Dover to his chest and abdomen while David was shot to his left arm, neck and head before the gunmen escaped.

Residents in the area rushed the injured men to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) in Mt Hope where emergency surgeries were performed. Dover, however, was pronounced dead yesterday morning.

Up to press time last night, David remained warded in a critical condition.

In another incident, officers said around 11.15 a.m., Omari Williams and Kurt Sandy of Eighth Avenue, Barataria, were liming along Eighth Avenue when a white car pulled up and the occupants opened fire.

Sandy was shot to the chest while Williams was grazed. The gunmen then sped off. Both men were taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital where Sandy was warded in a serious condition up to last night. Williams was treated and discharged.
