Fisherman dies after trying to retrieve net

A 57-YEAR-OLD man lost his life on Friday afternoon after jumping into choppy waters at Chaguaramas to retrieve a fishing net.

Dead is Hardath Pope, of Charles Street, Cunupia.

Police said around 2 p.m. Pope and another man fishing in a pirogue at Scotland Bay when their net fell overboard.

Investigators said Pope jumped into the water to retrieve the net but he began experiencing chest pains.

When his friend got into difficulties, police said the other man also went into the water in an attempt to save him.

However, because of the rough waters, he was unable to rescue him, said investigators.

The man reportedly suffered two broken ribs after he was slammed against the pirogue a number of times by the rough water, said police.

Sometime later, Pope's lifeless body was recovered by Coast Guard officers.

His body was removed to the Forensic Science Centre, Federation Park, where an autopsy is expected to be performed tomorrow.
