Former car thief shot dead

A one-time car thief turned violent cocaine addict was shot dead on Sunday afternoon near a graveyard at King Street, St Joseph.

The victim was Dereck Issac, alias "Gouti". He was 45 and homeless.

Police said that around 2.30 p.m. residents who live opposite the graveyard heard two gunshots. When they came out they say Issac lying on the road with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. No-one saw the shooter.

A team of officers from the nearby St Joseph Police rushed over to the scene. They picked up Issac and took him to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body was later moved to the Port of Spain Mortuary. If he is positively identified by his relatives a postmortem will be done at the Forensic Science Centre.

Police and residents told the Express yesterday that Issac was well known in the community for his antics which included walking around and twisting his hands as if trying to start a car.

One resident, a PH taxi-driver, said that Issac would often throw stones at cars and people and was usually left alone.
