Gun found in abandoned church

A  sub-machine gun  has been found in an abandoned church along Laventille Road, east Port of Spain.

The high powered Walter sub-machine gun with one magazine and 32 rounds of 9mm ammunition were discovered in the abandoned church  in the vicinity of Desperlie Crescent.

According to police reports, around 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, a party of officers attached to the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) and the Criminal Gang and Intelligence Unit (CGIU), acting on information received, conducted a search of the abandoned church along the Laventille Road.

At the derelict structure, the officers found the illegal firearm and ammunition together with a quantity of marijuana which weighed an estimated 55 grammes.

Because no civilians were near the illegal items when they were discovered, no one was arrested for the find.

However, the officers were said to be acting on information which they believe would lead to arrests in the immediate future.
