Prince Edward and Princess Sophie, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, were scheduled to leave last night after a hectic second day of their two-day visit to this country.
The trip was part of a tour of the Caribbean aboard the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Fort Rosalie to commemorate Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee.
Yesterday morning the couple attended separate events, with the Prince at an Olympic Teleconference at Belmont Boys’ Secondary School and touring the school with Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh and Port of Spain Mayor Louis Lee Sing. The Princess visited the Princess Elizabeth Centre in Woodbrook, built on lands gifted by Queen Elizabeth II.
The couple were reunited later on for a march past and parade at the Heliport at Chaguaramas featuring members of the Military Led Academic Training Programme (MILAT ) and Military Led Youth Programme of Apprenticeship and Re-orientation Training (MYPART).
The Princess wore an outstanding olive hat with an oval shape and feathers while the Prince inspected the parade in his white dress uniform as Commodore-in-Chief of the RFA, an honorary title for the civilian-manned fleet owned by the British Ministry of Defence. He later chatted with the young trainees who told the Express the Prince was very kind, friendly and down to earth as he asked them about the programme.
Following lunch with high ranking members of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, the couple were later scheduled to attend another parade at the St John Ambulance Association in Port of Spain featuring MILAT trainees and members of the Cadet Force.
Last night they were scheduled to have dinner with CEOs of British businesses and Trade Minister Stephen Cadiz before returning to the RFA Fort Rosalie at the Cruise Ship Complex to depart and continue their Caribbean tour.
