I take no credit, says Maha Sabha head

SECRETARY-General of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha Sat Maharaj wants to take no credit for the firing of former minister of the people and social development Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh.
Instead, he suggested the Opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) take an example from the actions of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Maharaj said Persad-Bissessar’s decision to revoke Ramadharsingh’s appointment on Tuesday night proved she was strong and not afraid to act.
Maharaj said, “I wish the PNM would pay attention to the voice of the people, as the (Kamla Persad-Bissessar-led) Government is paying attention. A (PNM) Government has not fired anybody. You have a minister who stood up and said all of we thief in the PNM, and nobody did anything about it. They pretend nothing happened.”
Responding to reports it was Maharaj’s comments that jolted Persad-Bissessar to make a decision, Maharaj said several other people had called for the removal of Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh as minister of the people.
Maharaj had called for Ramadharsingh’s resignation following allegations of misconduct against him by Caribbean Airlines Ltd (CAL) flight attendant Ronelle Laidlow.
“There were different calls. Why only my voice? I thought the statement by (Allan) Clovis was more powerful than my statement. He came out and said (he) was also on a flight when the minister misbehaved. That was a damning statement,” he said yesterday.
Tobago hotelier Allan Clovis claimed he witnessed Ramadharsingh verbally abuse a flight attendant on a flight some years ago.
Maharaj said, “We took a position that the minister did not behave correctly in the public and we called on him to offer his resignation to the Prime Minister.
“The Prime Minister has all the facts and she came to the conclusion that he should be removed as the minister of the people,” he said.
Maharaj said the decision was brave and proved Persad-Bissessar was a strong person.
“We believe it is a brave decision, considering that he was one of the trusted Cabinet ministers. She is a strong person to make that decision and it was entirely hers.
“I know she is close to (Ramadharsingh’s) family. I know the family well, too. But it is about principle and doing what is right. He was a senior minister,” he said.
