ID of second slain car-stealing suspect still unknown

By Carolyn Kissoon

Police are yet to identify one of two suspected car thieves killed in a shootout with police during a chase in central Trinidad on Thursday.

And Central Division police continued the search yesterday for a third suspect who escaped.

One of the deceased was identified as Beresford Asoon, who police said was a known car thief from Sangre Grande.

Police said the three men attacked a woman and stole her $230,000 vehicle as she entered her Roystonia, Couva, home around 9.40 p.m.

The woman told police her family was returning home from shopping in Valsayn when she noticed a white Toyota Corolla car following behind.

Police said as the woman pulled up at her front gate two men alighted from the car behind and confronted her at gunpoint. The family members were ordered out of the vehicle.

A team of officers lead by Senior Supt Johnny Abraham spotted the vehicle near Freeport and gave chase.

Police said there was an exchange of gunfire and the thieves abandoned the vehicle and began running.

Two men were shot dead while one escaped.
