It was a grand send off for Chaguanas Mayor Orlando Nagassar this morning as his term as mayor comes to an end pending the local government election on Monday.
As early as midnight, scores of men, women and children were assembling near the Longdenville Police Post. Their mission, to close to five kilometres to deliver a letter of thanks to Nagassar.
While waiting two hours and 45 minutes for the planned 1a.m. march to begin, the supporters of Jack Warner's Independent Liberal Party (ILP) sipped on coffee, slept in their cars and chatted in a bid to keep awake for the arrival of "Uncle Jack".
Warner arrived 3.45 am and within five minutes had his green candle lit and was on his way.
The group was accompanied by a music truck, and stopping seven times to pray. The supporters clad in their green and holding their green candles or deyas marched along the Chaguanas Main Road.
At Woodford Lodge grounds Warner and several of his 136 local government candidates thank their supporters, some coming from as far as Manzanilla and Tabaquite.
After having breakfast at the grounds, Warner marched to the Chaguanas Borough Corporation and delivered the letter to a police officer after being informed that the Mayor was not coming to work.
