Iere Village residents want cemetery reopened
RESIDENTS of Iere Village, Princes Town, are calling on the Princes Town Regional Corporation to open the community’s cemetery to the public.
Awad Mohammed said the cemetery has been closed for three months because of dilapidated conditions, for which he blamed the corporation.
Mohammed said he was hoping the cemetery would be open in time for All Saints Day in November.
If the corporation does not repair and open the cemetery soon, he said, residents will be protesting.
However, corporation chairman Ramraj Harripersad said there was a serious landslip and therefore the cemetery was condemned.
He said Palo Seco Agricultural Enterprises Ltd was given the task of restoring and reconstructing the landslip area, which he said was threatening a few houses.
Harripersad said: “We had to close it because should there have been untoward incidents, meaning someone slipping, falling, damaging themselves or anything of that nature, given the landslip, we would have been liable through the court of law.”
He said: “We are maintaining it nonetheless, meaning the place is cut and it is well kept.”
Harripersad said: “Sometime people must accept the fact that these things happen.
“It is an act of nature.”
