Attorney General Anand Ramlogan said last night he would comply with the instructions of the Prime Minister to convene a meeting with the Prison Officers Association, the Inspector of Prisons and the other stakeholders as soon as possible.
“I will continue and deepen the dialogue we were having with the Prison Association to address their specific concerns,” he said.
He also took note of the statement made by the Law Association calling for an independent investigation.
“We will in fact address any specific allegations made against any attorney in my ministry or any external attorney. And should the need arise (if there is any instance of wrongdoing), I will have no hesitation in referring the matter to the Judicial and Legal Services Commission and the Law Association for appropriate action to be taken,” he said.
Ramlogan said he welcomed that position taken by the Law Association that “one could not embark on a general probe, as one had to be clear about the specific allegations being made so that they could be properly addressed”.
