Jack: Offering $$ to police absurd

By Kim Boodram

FORMER national security minister Jack Warner yesterday described as “totally absurd” a suggestion by the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) that Government’s $3.5 million reward for information in the killing of Dana Seetahal, SC be passed to the police.

Warner, in a brief telephone interview, said the suggestion essentially turns the police into “bounty hunters” and while Seetahal’s murder was cruel and unjust, it should not be treated as being more important than any other murder to have happened in the country.

“It was wrong in the first place for Government to have offered a reward,” said Warner, who is also the sitting MP for Chaguanas West.

“But to suggest giving it to the police is to compound that absurdity. Where is the love of efficiency and the job?”

Seetahal was gunned down two Saturdays ago on O’Connor Street, Woodbrook, as she headed home from an evening at Ma Pau Members Club on Ariapita Avenue.

In a media statement Wednesday, DOMA labelled as “lame” the response of the authorities to the killing and suggested that the reward could serve as an incentive of offered to those police to solve the case.

Warner said yesterday: “As heinous as this murder was, you cannot treat it as being more important than other murders.”

He added that Seetahal’s death will also be a victim of the “seven-day wonder” mentality of Trinidad and Tobago and is now serving as a tool being used by those in authority to avert attention from themselves.

Asked whether he was confident that Seetahal’s killers will be brought to justice, Warner said:

“Based on my experience, I have no confidence of any success in this case. In fact, if by chance someone is caught in the fullness of time, that person will escape in the court.”
