Jack ‘screened at Alcatraz’

By Jensen LaVende

INTERIM leader of the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) Jack Warner seemingly screened candidates for the upcoming local government elections from well-known US prison Alcatraz, acting Prime Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal said yesterday.

“Mr Warner should look at his own candidates and leave the Government alone. It would seem that he was screening at Alcatraz when we look at his candidates,” said Moonilal.

“Mr Warner is now leading a tabloid platform. I think people are becoming fed-up of these types of attacks, I think the people would much rather hear about developmental policies and crime-fighting initiatives,” he said during a tour of the soon-to-be-completed Duncan Street Police Post.

“We continue to hear bacchanal... Mr Warner is advised to keep focus on his own candidates. I understand that one has been denied bail and is in jail. I think two have withdrawn (because) they have long rap sheets, they have matters before the courts, and I don’t mean the furniture store.”

Moonilal was referring to Kerwin Bucchan, ILP candidate for Morvant in the San Juan Laventille Regional Corporation, who was denied bail when he appeared in court on gun-related charges on Thursday.

It is alleged that on Tuesday at Moonstone Crescent, Edinburgh 500, Chaguanas, Bucchan shot at Mohammed Ali and Yaseen Ali, and shot with intent at Kareem Ali, a child, to do grievous bodily harm. Bucchan was also charged with possession of a Taurus .45 pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition to endanger life.

Regarding the upcoming by-election in St Joseph, to be held on November 4, Moonilal said by next week the United National Congress would screen for a candidate.
