Jack feels vindicated with PURE audit: No corruption under me

By Carla Bridglal

Works and Infrastructure Minister Jack Warner said yesterday he felt "vindicated" by the results of the audit into the Programme for Upgrading Road Efficiency (PURE), adding the programme has always been "ethical".

"I have said from day one that there has been no corruption in PURE under me and will be none under me," Warner told reporters yesterday after the launch of the Trinidad and Tobago Group of Professional Associations' Professional Directory at the Courtyard by Marriott, Invaders Bay, Port of Spain.

Questioned on what changes the unit's post-audit incarnation will have, Warner said, "It will be better, that's all."

Warner said there were no issues in the unit, with PURE and its procurement agency, National Insurance Property Development Co (Nipdec) working together, "pacing themselves", though he admitted there was a problem with cement.

He also vouched for the contractors working with the ministry, saying they have been ethical, and while some of them do shoddy work, it was not deliberate but from lack of expertise.

"We have found ways and means to marginalise them, but by and large, the vast majority are competent," he said.

Warner added he would be meeting with the chairmen of all the People's Partnership's parties on Monday at his Chaguanas West office to discuss the major points coming out of the political leaders' meetings.

"At the end of the day, we have pledged to give this country unity and a new kind of politics. Unity does not mean no disagreement, by the way, but if there must be disagreement, and it is in that context we must go—that we must be together if we are to succeed," he said.

Commenting on Congress of the People (CoP) protesters in Marabella against their Member of Parliament for San Fernando West Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan on Monday, Warner said while he empathised with her, he was "making sure I don't get into CoP business".

He also said that so far, the Point Fortin highway is "going well", and he will be meeting with environmentalist Dr Wayne Kublalsingh to discuss the issues Kublalsingh had against the construction of the highway, and a potential resolution.
