ANY attempt to begin work on the disputed Debe to Mon Desir segment of the Solomon Hochoy Highway extension to Point Fortin, will be met by protest action.
This was the position adopted yesterday Dr Wayne Kublalsingh and the Highway Re-Route Movement.
Kublalsingh said instead of the Government developing that area, the proposed highway would cause “massive destruction” to several communities.
On Friday, the Golconda to Debe segment of the Solomon Hochoy Highway extension to Point Fortin was opened by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
In her feature address she said because the first phase was opened, work on the second phase of the highway, from Debe to Mon Desir, was needed to avoid a traffic gridlock in Debe.
Kublalsingh, who has been camping outside the Prime Minister’s office in St Clair, Port of Spain, seeking a meeting with Persad-Bissessar, told the Express,
“We are not going to step aside for a project that is so destructive because I believe the Prime Minister indicated that we should step aside and let development continue. That is not development. It is massive mega project destruction. They (Government) have not proven the viability of this segment at all.”
He said a cost benefit analysis, hydrological study on the Oropouche Lagoon and a social cost needed to be conducted.
“How can we step aside when all those things are going on?” he asked.
Kublalsingh said he was not against the construction of the highway but there was an alternative route which the Government was not even considering.
“It is not that we are against a connectivity in the area. There is an alternative. The Prime Minister’s job is to fix up the people, fix them up nice, not to destroy them. And you can fix the problem without bulldozing through the communities.”
The Highway Re-Route Movement has also set up camp at Gopee Trace in Penal monitoring any work that may be taking place.
Kublalsingh said if any work begins in that leg, “we will bring more people on the ground” to protest.
He added: “The Prime Minister needs to remember that she gave her undertaking to the public to await the decision of the court before she starts any work between Debe and Mon Desir.”
