Laventille Rd man killed
CONFLICTING reports surround the death of a man from Laventille Road, San Juan, who was killed as he attempted to rob a San Juan supermarket on Friday evening.
The man’s relatives said he was a father of a newborn child and was a taxi-driver who made a viable living and would never be involved in crime. But up to last night, San Juan police claimed they did not know the name of the deceased.
The Sunday Express was told by eyewitnesses that around 6 p.m. on Friday evening, Damien John entered Ramish and Leela Supermarket, located on Eastern Main Road near the Croisee.
He went into the supermarket via the rear entrance and, armed with a knife, attempted to rob one of the grocery’s cashiers. However, other eyewitnesses claimed the man ran into the supermarket to get help following a nearby accident.
Eyewitnesses said security guards at the supermarket detained the man. It not known who assaulted the man, but he ran out of the supermarket, collapsed and subsequently died outside the rear entrance.
Several officers from the San Juan Police sub-station arrived on the scene, where they conducted enquiries. The man’s body was eventually moved to the Port of Spain Mortuary. Homicide Bureau officers are continuing investigations and they also said they are not yet calling the man’s death a homicide.—GG
