Laventille Wins $1 Million Hoop For Life

...Jack Warner booed

MINISTER of National Security Jack Warner was booed last night in Marabella by several people in a crowd that turned out for the million dollar final of the Hoop of Life basketball competition.

Warner, along with San Fernando West Member of Parliament Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan, attended the competition which drew a crowd of over 500 spectators at the basketball court at Trainline.

The basketballers of Laventille defeated the Marabella United team 66-57 on their home ground to take the three match series 2-0.

Laventille basketballers Steven "Lighter" Lewis scored 26 points and Kurt "Coto" Christian supported with 17.

Marabella United, in placing second took the prize money of $500,000.

The team's centre, Damian Caton, scored 17 points in the action-packed game.

The Hoop of Life competition was launched last June by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, as she unveiled a plan to tackle crime with sport among the nation's young people.

Persad-Bissessar launched the programme with former National Basketball Association player Dr Shaquille O'Neal.
