Laventille shooting leaves 1 dead, 5 injured

ONE man is dead and his brother and four others were injured after gunmen opened fire on a group of men playing cards in Laventille on Saturday night.

Dead is 22-year-old Marcus Simon of Seales Avenue in Laventille.

According to police reports, Simon was among a group of men who were playing cards along Seales Avenue when a silver coloured Nissan Almera pulled up and gunmen opened fire.

The car sped off.

Simon was shot about the body and died at the Port of Spain General Hospital around 3 a.m. yesterday.

Simon’s older brother Dexter, 35, who was also playing cards, was shot in the stomach.

Daniel Lawrence, 28, of Philbert Street in Laventille was shot in the cheek during the incident.

Also injured in the incident was 38-year-old Kerwin James of Seales Avenue, who was shot in his right thigh.

Keith Phillip, 22, of Old St Joseph Road and Noel Eastman, 24, were each shot on their right foot during the incident.

No motive has been determined for the shooting.

Homicide detectives are investigating the incident.

The murder toll for the year now stands at 35.
