HOMICIDE detectives are probing the shooting death of a 40-year-old Laventille man which occurred on Tuesday evening.
The victim has been identified as Matthew Sydney of 8 Picton Road, Laventille. Sydney, police said, was shot 14 times about the body while at Leau Place off Laventille Road, Laventille.
The incident, police said, occurred around 7 p.m.
Residents reported that they heard several loud explosions and upon checking, Sydney was discovered in a pool of blood in a track.
The police were notified and officers from the Inter Agency Task Force, led by Sgt Knott, responded to the shooting. By the time the officers arrived, Sydney was already dead.
District medical officer Dr Naidike visited the scene and ordered Sydney's body removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James, where an autopsy was expected to be conducted yesterday.
Officers said Sydney, who was not known to be involved in criminal activities, was dragged through a track from Picton Road to the bottom of Leau Place where he was shot.
A team of officers from the Besson Street Criminal Investigations Department and the Region I Homicide Bureau of Investigations, led by ASP Stephen Grant, Insp Sahadeo Singh and Cpls Darryl Jodha and Derrick Murray and PC Ming are probing the incident.
The murder toll up to yesterday stood at 317 according to an Express tally.
