Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday received an abundance of Tobago love as she walked through the streets of Scarborough, but the people also insisted that Government address the needs of the sister isle.
Persad-Bissessar and some members of the People's Partnership, among them TOP leader Ashworth Jack, Tobago MP Vernella Alleyne-Toppin and other Ministers and MPs such as Jack Warner, Dr Roodal Moonilal, Anil Roberts, Dr Fuad Khan and Winston Peters, made their way through the streets of Scarborough to greet the people.
Tobagonians lined the roadway and Persad-Bissessar shook hands and kissed and hugged many children.
As she walked she received praises for coming out to meet the people of Tobago. Persad-Bissessar and her Government are currently in Tobago until tomorrow for a workshop.
Following the walkabout, Persad-Bissessar told the media, "Let me first thank the people for this wonderful, hospitable welcome that they've given us, first when we landed at the airport and today here in Scarborough, tremendous love from Tobago. So it's Tobago love since elections, I'm happy to see that love is still there, but the hope is there and therefore the responsibility for us as a Government is to deliver to Tobago and to Trinidad."
She added, "They are saying treat Tobago well, take care of us and which is what people in Trinidad are saying, improve the quality of our life. It was tremendous walking here in Scarborough, I don't know if any Prime Minister has walked the streets of Scarborough but I'm very very happy to have done so."
Some of the people Persad-Bissessar greeted told the Express they would like to see the Prime Minister really pay attention to the sister isle.
Said Monica Daniel, "I think Kamla is like a goddess, she is just such a lovely woman, she's a good role model. I told her I was happy to meet her and it was the first time I was shaking the hand of a Prime Minister. She is so humble, I adore that."
Businessman Rahein George said, "She needs to stop and talk to the business people also and talk about developing Scarborough. We need more in Tobago too. We need more business places, we need to have more roads to get away from the congestion and traffic."
Said Esther Waldron, "This is one the best gestures that could have happen in Tobago today. No other Prime Minister did this before. I would like to see more cordiality and respect built up between Trinidad and Tobago, that is the biggest thing for me."
