MacFarlane gets 7th national Band of Year title

By Kim Boodram

Road March champ 2013 Austin "SuperBlue" Lyons' "Fantastic Friday" has sunk Machel Montano's "Float" in a stunning 511-to-56 victory.

There was no semblance of a tie for first place here, as results coming in from the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians' Organisation (Tuco) yesterday showed SuperBlue's runaway hit to have been the most played on Carnival Monday and Tuesday at seven judging points—the Queen's Park Savannah in Port of Spain, Adam Smith Square and South Quay in Port of Spain, Arima, San Fernando and Tobago.

SuperBlue and Machel Montano tied for the International Soca Monarch 2013 title last Friday.

This marks SuperBlue's ninth Road March title—his last win on the road being 2000's "Pump Up".

Montano took the Road March title last year with "Pump Yuh Flag".

SuperBlue's success is being hailed by many as possibly the best comeback in the history of soca and since his return for the 2013 season, support for him has been tremendous.

In 2009, he guest-starred with his daughter Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez for her offering, "Meet SuperBlue", which took home the Power and Groovy Soca Monarch and Road March titles.

Taking national Large Band of the Year for the seventh consecutive time was Brian MacFarlane, with Joy—The Finale, which he has declared to be his last time in the arena.

The Medium Band title was taken by The Conquest and, in the Small Band category, Under D Big Top took first place.
